Nicotine-free snus is a pouch built exactly like a modern white nicotine pouch, but with 0 mg of nicotine in it. The filler, the fleece pouch and the flavouring stay the same, the active substance is simply left out. What remains is taste, a cooling or sweet sensation and the familiar feel of a pouch under the lip. Brands such as Zeronito, LEO Zero, VELO Zero, XQS Zero, Loop Zero and Lewa Zero all follow this principle, and most of them are sold in the same slim format as their nicotine versions. As with every nicotine or flavour pouch in the shop, these products are intended for adults.
Key facts
- Nicotine content: 0 mg per pouch, declared on the can as "zero" or "nicotine free".
- No tobacco leaf: the filler is plant fibre or cellulose, the same base used in tobacco-free nicotine pouches.
- Format: usually slim pouches of roughly 0.5 to 0.8 grams, around 20 pouches per can.
- Flavours in this category include peppermint, cool mint, citrus, watermelon, cherry, grape, sour peach and a classic tobacco-style taste without tobacco.
- Rules for products without nicotine differ from one European country to the next, so it is worth checking what applies locally before ordering.
What is nicotine-free snus
It is a flavour pouch in snus format: a small fleece bag filled with moistened plant fibre, flavourings and sweeteners, without any nicotine added. The name comes from the original Swedish product. Traditional Swedish snus is ground tobacco; nicotine-free pouches contain neither tobacco nor nicotine, so the word "snus" here describes the format rather than the content.
In practice the can looks almost identical to a nicotine version. Same lid, same catch lid for used pouches, same pouch size. The difference is printed on the label: 0 mg instead of a milligram figure. If you want the wider picture of how the different categories relate to each other, the overview of snus types sorts them by tobacco content, format and moisture.
How does nicotine-free snus work without nicotine
It works through taste, temperature sensation and physical habit, not through a pharmacological effect. Saliva slowly dissolves flavourings, sweeteners and salt out of the filler. Menthol and synthetic cooling compounds trigger the cold receptors in the mucous membrane, which is why mint and "ice" versions feel strong even with no active substance in them.
The second part is the routine itself. Opening the can, placing a pouch, the twenty to forty minutes of taste: that sequence is a large part of what regular pouch users describe as the experience. A nicotine-free pouch keeps all of it except the nicotine.
There is no stimulant effect unless something else has been added. Energy and caffeine pouches form a separate category with their own ingredient list and their own declaration on the can.
What are nicotine-free pouches made of
The recipe contains four main components: a fibre carrier, water, flavourings and sweeteners, plus a small group of technical additives. Manufacturers declare them on the can or on the outer packaging.
| Component | Typical ingredient | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Filler | Microcrystalline cellulose, plant fibre, sometimes maltitol or gum base | Gives the pouch body and holds moisture |
| Moisture | Water, glycerol, propylene glycol | Keeps the pouch soft and releases flavour |
| Flavour | Food flavourings, menthol, cooling agents | Taste and cold sensation |
| Sweeteners | Acesulfame K, sucralose, steviol glycosides | Balances bitterness of the fibre |
| Stabilisers | Sodium carbonate, salt, acidity regulators | Keeps pH and shelf life stable |
| Pouch | Non-woven cellulose or viscose fleece | Holds the filler, lets flavour pass through |
Cellulose based additives carry the European E numbers E 460 to E 469 and are permitted food additives under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008. That does not make a pouch a food product, since a pouch is held in the mouth rather than swallowed, but it explains why the ingredient lists look familiar. The same construction is described in detail in what nicotine pouches are made of, with the nicotine component added.
Is nicotine-free snus harmful
Removing nicotine removes the nicotine-related effects, but it does not turn a pouch into an inert object, and the research base for this specific category is thin. No regulatory body in Europe has published a risk assessment dedicated to nicotine-free pouches. What is documented comes from users of pouches in general.
Two points are reported regularly and are mechanical or chemical rather than nicotine driven:
- Local irritation of the gum or the inner lip where the pouch sits, caused by pressure, pH and strong flavouring.
- Reactions to single ingredients, for example intense cooling agents or sweeteners.
Without nicotine, one group of effects is absent: the short rise in heart rate, nausea after a strong pouch and the dependence potential. The article on snus side effects separates these two groups in more detail.
Check the milligram figure, not the word on the lid. "Zero" sometimes refers to zero tobacco rather than zero nicotine. A genuinely nicotine-free can states 0 mg nicotine in the ingredient declaration.
Is nicotine itself harmful
Nicotine is the substance that causes dependence, and it acts on the cardiovascular system in the short term. The World Health Organization describes nicotine as highly addictive in its material on tobacco and nicotine products. After absorption through the oral mucosa, nicotine binds to acetylcholine receptors and produces a measurable, short-lived increase in heart rate and blood pressure.
Published research on oral nicotine pouches as a category remains limited, and long-term data are not yet available.
Nicotine-free snus vs tobacco-free nicotine pouches
Tobacco-free does not mean nicotine-free: the vast majority of white pouches on the market contain nicotine, just no tobacco leaf. Many buyers confuse the two categories because the marketing language used for both looks similar.
| Nicotine-free snus | Tobacco-free nicotine pouches | Swedish snus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tobacco | No | No | Yes, ground tobacco |
| Nicotine | 0 mg | Roughly 1 to 65 mg per pouch across the strength classes sold in this shop | Varies with the tobacco |
| Colour of filler | White | White | Brown |
| Main purpose | Flavour and format | Nicotine delivery | Nicotine delivery |
| Staining | Minimal | Minimal | Possible |
The pouches in our nicotine pouch range are tobacco-free but contain nicotine. The strength classes run from light cans of 1 to 5 mg per pouch, through medium cans of 6 to 10 mg, strong cans of 11 to 20 mg and extra strong cans of 21 to 30 mg, up to the extreme segment of 31 to 65 mg. The guide to tobacco-free snus alternatives deals with that category, while this article focuses on the 0 mg versions.
Who is nicotine-free snus for
Adults who want the pouch format without the substance. Three groups appear most often in this category.
- Habit keepers. People who value the ritual, the taste and the feel of a pouch, and who have no interest in nicotine at all.
- People reducing nicotine. Some users keep the format while lowering their nicotine intake and use 0 mg cans instead. Practical angles for that path are described in the article on snus withdrawal.
- Flavour buyers. Peppermint, citrus, watermelon or sour peach as a taste experience, similar to chewing gum but without the chewing.
Where to buy nicotine-free snus
Specialist online shops carry the widest selection, because the category is too small for most physical retailers to stock. Our nicotine-free snus collection covers the brands that produce in this segment: Zeronito, LEO Zero, VELO Zero, XQS Zero, Loop Zero and Lewa Zero. Between them they cover mint and ice profiles such as virgin peppermint, cool mint, icy mint, peppermint fire and freeze ice, fruit profiles such as watermelon, black cherry, blue raspberry, grape, mango, honey melon ice, strawberry kiwi lime and sour peach, a citrus cooling variant and a classic tobacco-style taste without tobacco.
Three things are worth checking before ordering:
- The declaration on the can: 0 mg nicotine, not only "tobacco free".
- The flavour family, since cooling intensity varies widely between an ice mint and a fruit pouch.
- Storage, because nicotine-free pouches dry out in the same way as any other moist pouch. Cool, closed and away from sunlight keeps the flavour release intact.
Rules for nicotine-free products are not identical across Europe. Requirements for sale, labelling and age limits differ from country to country, so it makes sense to check what applies where you live before ordering. The detailed article on the legal situation for snus in Germany sets out where the differences lie.
