Snus sits directly on the oral mucosa – that is the key difference from almost all other nicotine products. This means no smoke is produced. However, the pouch rests directly on the gums, continuously releasing substances and reacting with the surrounding tissue. White Snus: Less Moisture, Less Residue
White snus differs from classic snus through its significantly drier pouch content. The tobacco in white snus is processed so that fewer tar-containing compounds come into direct contact with the tissue. This does not make it harmless, but the local irritating effect is in practice less severe. Snus remains a nicotine-containing product that carries health risks.
Nicotine-Free Snus: The Most Direct Way to Protect
Anyone who wants to consistently reduce the strain on their gums and oral mucosa cannot avoid nicotine-free snus. Without nicotine, the vasoconstrictive effect is completely eliminated. The gums remain better supplied with blood, and the tissue's natural immune defence functions unimpeded. The mechanical pressure of the pouch remains, but the main biochemical trigger for the described damage is removed. For anyone who wants to keep the ritual but reduce the strain to a minimum, this is the most effective option.
Oral Hygiene as an Active Protective Measure
The 30-Minute Rule
Brushing your teeth immediately after snus sounds logical but is counterproductive. The altered pH level in the mouth temporarily weakens tooth enamel, similar to after eating or consuming acidic drinks. Brushing directly afterwards mechanically abrades the enamel while it is in a weakened state. The rule: wait at least 30 minutes, then brush. During this time, drink plenty of water to normalise the pH level and stimulate saliva flow.
Practical measures that make a difference:
- Brush teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, paying particular attention to the transition between tooth and gum
- Daily dental floss or interdental brushes to prevent bacterial build-up in gum pockets

- Visit the dentist every six months if you use snus regularly, so that changes are detected early
When You Need to See a Dentist
Some symptoms cannot wait. Whitish, non-wipeable patches on the mucosa that persist for more than two weeks must be examined without delay. The same applies to persistent pain at the application site, heavy gum bleeding that does not subside more than two weeks after quitting, and clearly visible gum recession with exposed tooth necks.
Snus and gums are not compatible with daily use over time without leaving their mark. The question is not whether, but how severe the changes will be.
